Philadelphia hospitality workers make our city a desirable destination for tourists from around the world. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, their hard work made possible more than $12 billion+ in tourism-related activity across the region. Philadelphia depends on the hospitality industry, and the industry depends on its workers.
Unfortunately, the corporations and Wall Street investment firms that have for years profited off the industry do not care about the sacrifices hospitality workers have made. Most workers have been out of work since the pandemic began, and have received no assurances that their jobs will be protected. Especially in the Black communities that account for the majority of the industry’s workers, this uncertainty has made an already devastating pandemic even more difficult to endure.
We are the housekeepers, cooks, bellmen, servers, bartenders, dishwashers and other workers who make up the Philadelphia hospitality industry. We are the customers, community leaders and allies who believe in supporting a more just hospitality industry that works for ALL participants.
We urge the Philadelphia City Council to pass legislation guaranteeing a Right to Return for hospitality workers. This is the only way to guarantee that our families and communities will have the economic stability they so desperately need moving forward.
